Safford, Arizona. This nugget of wisdom from the sheriff of Graham County: Fireworks that go up, must come down. Now, I'll bet you didn't know that!
In the sixth paragraph the article contains the Arizona statute listing the kinds of fireworks that your state government deems illegal. It sounds to me like if you wave matches around to celebrate you can be arrested.
Also, the article fails to mention how you can simply travel 40 miles east into New Mexico and suddenly the people are smart enough to safely light off their own fireworks.
Task force to patrol for illegal fireworks

Parched desert and exploding missiles don't go well together - neither do people and shooting flames.
This Fourth of July, if private citizens are caught putting on their own fireworks show or waving seemingly harmless sparklers around in the air, they can expect a fine or even some jail time.

Fireworks are illegal in the state of Arizona unless they are being handled by a government entity, and the Safford Police Department and the Sheriff's office are adopting a zero-tolerance policy this year.
Safford Chief John Griffin and Sheriff Frank Hughes told the Courier that the two agencies are putting together a task force to patrol the city and county for violators.
"If we catch them, we'll cite them," Griffin said.
According to Arizona Stature 36-1601: "'Fireworks' means any combustible or explosive composition, substance or combination of substances, or any article prepared for the purpose of producing a visible or audible effect by combustion, explosion, deflagration or detonation, and toy cannons in which explosives are used, the type of balloon which requires fire underneath to propel it, firecrackers, torpedoes, skyrockets, roman candles, daygo bombs, sparklers or other fireworks of like construction, fireworks containing any explosive or combustible compound, and any tablet or other device containing an explosive substance."
Last year, an elderly resident of Graham County was hit in the stomach by an exploding rocket that was, fortunately, almost spent.
Hughes said he hates to think of the implications if the rocket had been full strength.
"We want to do everything we can to avoid a tragedy," Griffin said.
Violators of the law could face significant fines and up to a year in jail even if no one is injured. If someone is injured or killed because of a fireworks violation, the violators could be looking at worse charges.
Hughes said when somebody shoots something up, it has to come down.
Should the fireworks come down in a patch of dry brush or other combustible material, it could result in a wildfire.
Griffin said the courts can order restitution for fire damage, and if a firefighter is wounded or killed while fighting the fire, violators are in for more than a fine and a short jail time.
The city of Safford donated $10,000 to buy fireworks this year. That money was put with other donations from the county and Phelps Dodge and added up to $16,000 for the show.
"This is going to be a tremendous event," Griffin said. "We want everyone to come out and enjoy the show.
"Leave the fireworks in New Mexico or wherever you get them," Griffin said. "It's just not worth the fines or the trouble."
The term "fireworks" does not include toy pistols, toy canes or toy guns.
